Manta Ray Bonanza diving in Sharm El Sheikh

Above is footage of a Manta taken on a Local Dive site in Sharm El Sheikh.

During many years of diving in Sharm El Sheikh, it was very rare to spot Manta Ray’s. We heard of a single spotting here and there with reports of 4 to 5 meter wing spans, but this was very seldom.

Nowadays we get far more sightings and we have just spotted 5 in three days.

The first was in Ras Mohamed. We had been out in the blue looking for the big shoal of Barracuda that lurks off Shark and Yolanda reefs. We were on our way back to the reef when a 3 meter manta glided towards us fleeing from a group of divers that was making their way along the reef.

The next sighting was the next day at Ras Um Sid when we had two pass overhead. One around 2.5 meters wide and the other approx 3 meters.

The next day we had another two pass us on Tower dive site. They could have been the same two as the previous day but who cares. They are such graceful creatures and a joy to watch in the water.
